Kishimoto Jump Interview: SPOILERS FOR 2010!!

This is a Confirmed Kishimoto Interview
on what will happen in 2010:

Source: Naruto Viz
contributed by: Kisuke Lama

Part 1:

Translated from Japanese:

Sakura's acting a little haughty towards Naruto.
She'll be more Heroine-like from now on.

Well it looks this is Sakura's chance to shine. If she fail here she pretty much fails as a character.

Sasuke's becoming more and more evil and him fighting Naruto will probably be the last event.

Well it wouldn't make much sense to have it anywhere else. They will fight
but Naruto will ultimately be able to convert Sasuke back. Somehow.

Something will happen to Taka as well.

I hope it's something a bit more eventful than die.

IF Naruto should become Hokage it most likely will be in the end.

Given that's what the story is mainly about then there's not much else
to write about. Yeah there's Konohamaru but he's basically Naruto-Lite.

There's no desire to have much romance for Shikamaru.

This isn't surprising. Shikamaru's "romances" are more of a tease. Shikamaru is very likely going to end up like his dad. Married to a
woman who wears the pants in the family. Kishimoto won't ever
show us how it happened but just that if it does that it did.

Naruto will have no-one around him who's up-front with him so Shikamaru will be a Confidante.

Awesome. Sounds like Shikamaru is being set up more and more for a pretty high position once Naruto becomes Hokage

Sasuke vs Danzo will decide Sasuke's future Path.
but he (kishimoto) said he will write something big for him.

Big for who? Sasuke or Danzo? Though this fight should be interesting.

Sakura really loves Sasuke.

Well of course. That's not too difficult to figure out.

Next Year will be Kakashi's year.

Part 2:

Each Voice actor asked questions to Kishimoto.

Nakaruma asked about what was upcoming with Sakura.
Kishimoto: "Honestly, from the standpoint of showing a female-like disposition she hasnt been much of a Heroine. You could even say Hinata is more of a heroine than her.But since, as we know, Sakura is a Heroine deep inside. She'll show that side of hers from now on"

Let's hope so. We don't need any more of her emotional baggage.

Naruto's close. But Sakura loves Sasuke as we should expect from that speech. She's being haughty with Naruto using not so kind words agains Naruto.

Part 3:

Well Naruto is her friend and she doesn't want him to get hurt.
However her methods of doing so aren't very good.

Yeah its true it did sound Sugiyama once said "With a Suna Person" when Morikubo asked about Shikamaru's love life.
Kishimoto said he doesnt wanna write that for Shikamaru.

That's what fan fictions are for

Takeuchi: "Will Naruto become Hokage?"
Kishimoto: "He should become Hokage"
This had the Audience make Noise.

Notice he says "should"? Though I say Naruto BETTER become Hokage
or die trying.

Takeuchi: "Won't Sakura become Hokage before Naruto does?"
Kisimoto answered flatly: "No way!"

Nice try, Takeuchi. Nice try.

Kishimoto announced Naruto will do Training.
Takeuchi: "So Naruto will become stronger again."
Next Year Kakashi is the Main Character.

Takeuchi: "It would be a good thing not to tell this to Kazuhiko-san"
Sugiyama: "You probably can't speak of the outcome of the Danzou fight, but what happens with Taka after?"

Kishimoto: "I can't speak to what happens with the Danzou fight, but there'll be some things happening within Taka (dissent?) and the look in Sasuke's eyes will grow more and more evil. I've just recently decided on such a course of the story" (these words make it seem as if the Sasuke-related part isn't really decided upon, so take this part with a grain of salt).

Part 4:

Next was the Questions For Kishimoto-sensei Corner

Nakamura-san started off with something like, "With the latest developments, Sakura has..."
He said something like, that chick* (Takeuchi reacted to that "That chick" lol) is detestable for using Naruto's good will, but, well that's just how I'd think to write a realistic girl.
You hear all the time that Sakura is a detestable person, but that's what seems to be the intention

"Since Sakura is the heroine", "I'll be writing from now on to show her with that disposition"
"Though everyone says Hinata-Hinata all the time..."

↑I wonder if it's that their voices supporting Hinata are so loud (my personal impression)
Sugiyama wavered on which question to ask (normal fan thing)
He asked: "What will happen to Sasuke after fighting Danzou?"
"The ending of the Danzou fight will determine Sasuke's coming development (whether it be his movement or his intentions)"
"As will the course of those in Taka

Masashi Kishimoto Interview (About Minato) - March 2008

This is a late post from March 2008 Shonen Jump

SJ = Shonen Jump
MK = Masashi Kishimoto

SJ: There's many rumours regarding Madara being the absolute final villain. Is this true?

MK: Madara being the final villain is yet to be seen and I can't let that information out just yet. But he will play a big part as a villain, that's for sure.

SJ: Now that it's officially known that Yondaime is Naruto's father, will you show more of Minato?

MK: Yes, definitly. I actually wanted to reveal more about Yondaime earlier, but other characters were in development and some fights still had to be dealt with.

SJ: While we're at it... could you please tell us if Minato was the strongest shinobi that ever lived?

MK: Hmmm, it's a tricky question. As far as dead shinobis goes, then yes, he's the strongest. I'd say that Sandaime shares the number one spot with him. As far as living shinobis goes... well, without going into many details I'd have to say no. There's a couple of shinobis whose stronger than him.

SJ: Now that Itachi seems to be dead, what is Kisame going to do now?

MK: Kisame has always come off as a sidevillain whose only purpose is to travel along Itachi. But to my surprise, Kisame has gone from an unpopular character to someone whose more popular than Deidara after the Gai-fight. I won't say too much, but Kisame is a character that wont die anytime soon. I will definitly develop on his character more and possibly make him...

SJ: Make him what?

MK: It's a surprise.

Masashi Kishimoto Interview by Naruto Collector

Naruto Collector: If you weren't the creator of Naruto and were simply a fan of the manga, which character's poster would be your first choice to put up in your bedroom?

Masashi Kishimoto: I'd prefer a female character, so maybe Tsunade, and maybe one of Naruto performing the Ninja Centerfold Jutsu. And Gaara....he's one of my favorite characters. (I posted a little about that last night but didn't notice he was talking about posters, not favorite characters.XD)

NC: If you were a ninja, to which village would you belong? And what would your signature jutsu be?

MK: Of course, I would be from Konoha. I'd master the Art of the Shadow Doppelganger Jutsu, so I can shorten the amount of time I spend on drawing.

NC: Would that give you more sleeping time?

MK: Hopefully, because I'm really sleep deprived....

NC: If you were to do a spin-off series that focused on one of the side characters (or a group of side characters) (were they hoping for Akatuski?) , who would it be?

MK: I'm thinking about doing one with the Fourth Hokage as the lead character. He'll be much younger. I intend to draw the Fourth as a child.

NC: In America, your manga is sold in bookstores that don't even carry other manga or comics. So in a way, it has actually changed how some bookshops sell books. How do you feel about that?

MK: I've been in Japan this whole time, so I don't know much about what's happening in America. But I'm really glad that Naruto is getting so much attention. It's a great honor. I think Americans know what's good (laughs).

NC: Which member of the Akatsuki is your favorite to draw?

MK: Hmm, let's see....Tobi. His face is covered on one side and has a hole on the other. He's easy to draw (Laughs).

NC: We know a lot about Naruto, Itachi, Gaara and Kakashi, but does Sakura have dark secrets we don't know about yet?

MK: She's a normal girl, so I haven't given it much thought.

NC: How did you change your drawing style to fit the new characters and storyline of Naruto Part II?

MK: In Part II, I try not to overdo the typical manga style. I don't go for too much deformation and keep the layout of the panels simple in order to make it easier to follow. My drawing style has also shifted from the classic manga look to something a bit more realistic.

NC: Many of the older Konoha Village ninja are dying. How do you feel about the younger ninja taking over the responsibilities for the safety and welfare of the village?

MK: It's the same in manga. There are a lot of great manga artists that I admire, beginning with Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori, Fujio Fujiko, etc. I'm not their blood relative, but they influence me in ways that seem as though they've been passed on through genes and are spreading like a ripple. To inherit a legacy and pass it on...I think that's wonderful. Whatever I've inherited from people in the past or those whom I call my predecessors, I'd like to put into perspective and depict in the manga. I think people can identify with it. At least that's my view.

NC: It makes the story very epic.

MK: For instance, I really love the work of Toriyama-sensei (Dragon Ball) and Otomo-sensei (Akira), and Ghost in the Shell, so you can tell how much they influenced me. In turn, younger artists will be influenced by the manga I draw. Such a world, I think, is really cool. The idea of passing a baton in a relay, so to speak, is something that I hope to portray in manga.

NC: Did you map out the entire plot of Naruto right from the beginning, or do you find yourself making new choices about characters and storylines as you go?

MK: I've already decided on the overall plot, but depending on the flow, I change the direction in which it's going right in the middle of things. Sometimes I just make it up along the way, and other times I do what I orginally intended to do. It's a weekly installment, and I have deadlines. I'm not always able to do everything I wanted to do. My private life and how my hours are spent ultimately will have an influence on the story. That's what it comes down to. Having a new editor affects the story too.

NC: What is the most important thing for you to express in Naruto Part II?

MK: I've always had "bonds" in my mind as the fundamental theme. And since the story is about battles and struggles, I'm inclined to depict the resulting complications and....difficult relationships. Still, the emphasis will be on bonds. I'm going to show each side's perspective. I won't really divide the cast into friends and foes, but I want to portray each group's circumstance in a fair manner. And when they clash, I want to get inside the mindset of the characters. It won't be a feel-good narrative, since the premise is more complicated than your basic good vs. evil, but I'll give it a try.

NC: Do you have any message for your fans in the U.S.?

MK: I have no idea how big Naruto is or how it's perceived in America, yet it's such a joy to hear that a lot of people read it. And I hope you keep on enjoying it. If you read it until the end, I promise that it's going to be worthwhile. So please, don't get bored. Keep going! Thank you very much.

What to Expect in NARUTO in 2009

Start of Kishi Interview Spoilers

1. Akatsuki Leader’s(not confirmed if its Pein / Madara) strength can’t be matched even with 3 Sannins of the leaf.
–> Currently Pein seems to be the leader. However, Madara has been seen to play an increasing role in terms of behind the scenes management of the team.

2. There is another character in Akatsuki, and unexpected member will bring a chaos
–> Is he talking about Madara? Or Sasuke as he is now a member of Akatsuki.

3. One of the Akatsuki’s member becomes friend/ally with Naruto
–> Is he talking about Itachi as he has supposedly given Naruto part of his powers before he died.

4. Naruto’s seal will be released by the end of 08, or beginning of the 09. At least 4 tails will be released, be prepared it could be shocking scene
–> 4 tails have been released. Seen that….no big deal.

5. Toad dies(he laughs)
–> Is he talking about Fukusaku or Jiraiya?

6. Three (3) of Naruto’s important people will die or get seriously injured
–> Jiraiya is dead. Kakashi is already seriously injured. So now just a matter of whether he will be dead in the next chapter. Tsunade still pending though a lot of people are saying that her time has come. Question is: Who will be Hokage of Konoha then if Tsunade dies? So my prediction here is that Kakashi will die while Tsunade will be injured and Danzou will take this opportunity to takeover the Hokage title from Tsunade.

7. Sasuke’s skills cannot be matched against Naruto’s new skills.
–> We have not seen this yet and obviously those 2 years with Jiraiya have yet to show its results. More kage bunshin stuff while Rasenshuriken was helped by Kakashi. Maybe sage mode will yield surprising effects? Also, Jiraiya’s restrictions on Naruto?

8. Sasuke v. Itachi is great scale, and later Naruto’s information about family and bloodline will show up
–> Done for Sasuke vs Itachi. But Naruto’s family is slowly being revealed while his bloodline (he has a bloodline limit?) has not yet been covered.

9. Sai, he will cause something huge(laughs)
–> Not sure what this is

10. 4th’s secret and bloodline will be shown
–> Not yet but I suppose once this happens, Naruto will most likely follow suit with his bloodline limit as well. As this moment we are still not sure what is the ability unless Kishi is talking about the teleportation.

11. 2 huge characters of Konoha will die.
–> Jiraiya and either Kakashi or Tsunade. At least we know both of them won’t die but I’d rather see Tsunade dead than Kakashi.

12. There is a female member in Akatsuki
–> Konan

13. Akatsuki will invade Konoha with its mysterious beasts, and Shiranui Genma will provide great help to Konoha
–> Not sure what this is yet but it’s surprising to see Genma providing help when he has not been given that many roles throughout Naruto

Kishi @ 2008 Jump Festa

1. Uchiha’s secret will be revealed and 2 of the remaining will die
–> Uchiha’s secret of MS and etc revealed by Itachi, and Itachi is dead.

2. Akatsuki’s leader kills 6 people (Does this mean Pein is the confirmed leader?)
–> Bodycount is still increasing although we have Jiraiya down. Big catch for Pein.

3. Sasuke and Itachi’s fight will cause chaos; Uchiha, Uchiha Madara’s secrets are revealed and all the skills of the MS will be revealed. The fight will end with death of one.
–> MS : Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, and finally Susano’o

4. Naruto will collide with Pain; Kakashi’s team will collide with Tobi. There will be big turnaround on Tobi v. Kakashi’s team. Naruto v. Pain will be fights of the “beasts”. Be prepared, during this fight there will be deaths from Naruto’s team.
–> Meaning Kakashi will not die. So most likely Tsunade?

5. Three new members will join the Akatsuki. They will be stronger than Deidara, Hidan, and Kakuzu. One of them is the brother/sister of the Hokage
–> So assuming Tsunade dies and Danzou were to try and organize a coup to takeover Konoha as Hokage, he fails and flees. Then Danzou joins Akatsuki and revealed as the brother/uncle to Tsunade. Sounds believable? I believe so. Danzou the brother/uncle to Tsunade.

6. Naruto’s new skills and the result of the training will reveal when he fight against Pain. He have learned all of the Jiraiya’s jutsu during the 3 years of the time and he became much stronger. He did not learn the “toad mode or w.e u call it”. Naruto also learned 3 of the 4th’s jutsus.
–> So Naruto will eventually master all of Jiraiya’s techniques but hasn’t been shown yet. He has mastered Rasenshuriken which essentially surpasses the 4th’s rasengan. The other 2 techniques could be teleportation or something to do with Minato’s bloodline limit since Naruto is his son.

7. After all these fights, there will be a great war
–> We shall see

8. There will be death on Tobi v. Naruto team and one of them becomes unable to fight.
–> I wonder who……

9. Jinchuuriki of the 8 tailed will be revealed. This Jinchuuriki kills one of the Akatsuki’s members and invades Konoha by him/herself. During this fight one dies, and one will lose his/her eyesight
–> Killerbee invades Konoha? This is surprising. Wonder what is the story or motivating factor that pushes Killerbee to fight Konoha.

Masashi Kishimoto Interview About NARUTO

What were you like when you were younger (say in middle school or high school)?
I had manga on the brain, and I was constantly drawing, hardly ever doing my homework. In short, a bit of a brat.

How did growing up in a rural environment influence your manga, or your personality in general?
This is a story set in a slow-paced, relaxed setting, far away from capitalist society. My personality is very slow-paced, too, so that's why I often just barely meet my deadlines for the manga.

I've heard that you were a huge fan of Akira Toriyama's Dragonball and Dr. Slump. What was your favorite storyline in Dragonball? Or, if you prefer, who was your favorite character?
I love all the stories up until the first appearance of Freeza. My favorite character is Kuririn, because he has the most "human" feel, and I really associate myself with him.

When you were young, you were attacked by monkeys. Can you tell us about the experience?
I accidentally stepped on a young monkey, and the alpha male of the group and the mother of the monkey attacked me. Ever since then, I have been afraid of monkeys. But these days, I look back on the incident and realize that the protective, nurturing aspect of the monkey is just the same as what a human would feel.

You grew up next to a military base, and the ninja in Naruto behave something like a military force, with discipline and training. Are you a military enthusiast, and did you ever consider joining the Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF)?
I don't really consider myself a military enthusiast. Where I grew up didn't actually have a military base, as Japanese doesn't have a military, just a Self-Defense Force. What I did was use the training ground for the SDF as reference, in addition to books on the Mossad and the SAS. I never wanted to join the JSDF, as I wanted to draw manga.

I've heard that you were most inspired by Akira -- the anime, and the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo. Why is this, and what inspired you?
I consider Akira (1988) to be the first Japanese anime to use the "fresco" style of art. Unlike the other works during that time, the character designs, lines, and sense were very realistic, as was the manga itself. Even the buildings were very detailed, and the sheer amount of information that the art conveyed was incredible. It was a very cool science fiction manga. I think it's also the reason anime became so popular in the U.S. I got a bunch of storyboards for Akira when I was 14, and remember constantly copying them.

What was it like going to art school? What was the most useful thing you learned there?
I trained in plaster mediums and the drawing of the human body to increase my skills as a design artist. I also learned graphic design, coloring, and perspectives. Manga is still an art form that you pick up by yourself -- that's the current reality of the Japanese manga industry. Although the drawing skills that I learned in art school were quite useful, I had the abilities of drawing and perspective prior to entering art school. Thus, going to art school was more of a step backward for me.

What was it like being "trained" to be a professional manga artist fro Weekly Shonen Jump? What kinds of things did you learn?
Of course, art is a big part of being a manga artist, but equally important is being able to write a story well. I do pretty much everything by myself, from the characters to the story to the backgrounds. Also, receiving advice from the editor is important, but I think getting a good editor who is supportive of you is key.

You played baseball as a kid, and at one point you considered making a baseball manga. Do you still follow baseball? If so, what is your favorite team?
I love playing baseball, but I don't really like watching it. I don't have a favorite team in Japan. If Japan had major league teams as impressive as the Americans, I might have a team I would root for.

I've heard that you are a fan of traditional Japanese adventure stories. Do you like chanbara eiga [sword fighting movies set in Japan's feudal period] or historical fiction?
I like chanbara, but the recent chanbara films don't have the feel that the older movies have, and I'm not a big fan of the recent ones. I'm hoping a much cooler director comes out and creates an awesome chanbara film. (In Japan, chanbara films are typically produced by aging directors who are completely behind the times. It's difficult for new directors with fresh ideas to be accepted by the old-school Japanese film industry.)

Especially since the early 1980s, ninja have been very popular in American movies and comics. Have you been inspired by any American ninja stories?
I know a little bit about the popularity of Sho Kosugi [star of many action movies] during that period, as well as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'm happy, from the perspective of someone from Japan, to see the new way ninjas are perceived in America. Although I hear there are some people who are upset about how the entire "ninja mythology" has been screwed up because of it.

This may be an American misconception, but when I think of "ninja" I think of figures wearing completely black outfits, usually with masks. But the ninjas in Naruto look completely unlinke this old stereotype. How did you come up with the interesting "Konoha Style" of the ninjas in Naruto?
If I created a world that recycles the traditional concept of a ninja it would have ended up just like all the other ninja manga. I wanted to create a ninja world with a twist, something fresh, so I completely threw out the preconceived notions of what a ninja should be like. Besides, Naruto is a blond-haired ninja wearing yellow clothing, who is supposed to be part of a secret intelligence gathering organization. There's no way that a ninja who stands out that much would really exist. (laughs)

Samurai are of almost equal fame to ninja, and in pop culture, in some ways, they seem like the opposite of ninja -- forthright instead of sneaky. Are there any powerful samurai in the world of Naruto, or are ninja the overwhelmingly dominate power in this world?
I do have a few samurai characters: Zouri and Waraji (although they're kind of "lame" samurai). But there are way too many samurai manga out there, so to stay original I'll continue the ninja stories.

The character Jiraiya, who appears in Naruto, is based on a legendary ninja. Is Naruto inspired by any other particular legends?
Jiraiya is about the only character who is like that; the others are all original.

Your work seems to have a science fiction influence. Approximately speaking, what is the level of technology in the world of Naruto?
Actually, the world of Naruto doesn't differ very much from our present time. Television, refrigerators and air conditioners exist in the world. The only exceptions are weapons and explosives, which I've decided to set in a much earlier era. That's why you don't see firearms in the world of Naruto.

Many Shonen Jump manga have puns for character names, so can you explain some puns in the name of Naruto characters? I know that Naruto is a world for the spiral fishcakes in ramen... But I've also heard of a place off the sea of Japanese called the Naruto Uzumaki (the Naruto whirlpools), like Naruto's first and last name.
Uzumaki (spirals) are a very cool Japanese pattern. Weekly Shonen Jump's philosophy for naming characters is to create a name that the readers can easily associate with the character, by combining it with puns and gags.

How did you develop the chakra power system in Naruto? Are you interested in East Indian mysticism?
I actually have no interest in East Indian mysticism. I need a hook to tie in those points in the story when the characters would use powers that were beyond normal human capabilities. The term is chakra, which is used as an explanation for readers to better understand the powers. It's similar to "the Force" in Star Wars, or chi (aka ki) in Dragonball, or "magic points" in RPGs.

How did you develop the mystic hand gestures used by the ninja in Naruto?
As an alternative to the standard verbal method of casting spells, like in RPGs, the ninja use hand gestures instead.

In Naruto, the frog seems to be associated with the character Naruto. Also, in an early drawing you associate the snake with Sasuke, and the snail with Sakura. What about these animals caused you to connect them with these characters? Are ninja associated with frogs in Japan?
When you talk about ninjas, you invariably talk about frogs. There is a ninja manga whose main character is "Hattori-kun," who (as a joke in the story) does not like frogs, so this connection between ninjas are frogs is a close one [in Japanese Folklore, frogs are considered magical animals, and the oil from a frog's skin is a traditional ointment for wounds and other ailments]. The triad of snake, snail and frog is from Japanese mythology. The snake is more powerful than the frog, the snail is more powerful than the snake, and the frog is more powerful than the snail, making a "paper, rock, scissors" sort of situation. These three are collectively called the Sansukumi.

What inspired you to do a story about a demon fox? What interests you about kitsune (foxes)?
Because the kitsune (fox), in particular the kyubi no yƓko (Nine-Tailed Fox), is considered to be one of the most powerful supernatural beasts.

What is the relationship of Naruto and the demon fox? Was the demon fox killed and reincarnated inside of Naruto's body, or was it sealed inside the baby Naruto without dying? Are there two souls within Naruto's body, in the mystical sense, or is it more like two personalities, in the psychological sense?
The demon fox has been sealed inside of Naruto without having been killed. It's because the Nine-Tailed Fox couldn't be killed, so they had no choice but to seal it away... probably... which is why there are two personalities inside of Naruto.

Do you get more fan letters from boys or girls? Do boys and girls like different things about the series?
Fan letters are typically written by girls, as it seems that "boys don't write letters." About 90% of the fan letters seem to be from girls, even though the majority of reader are supposed to be boys. It was like that when I used to read Weekly Shonen Jump as a kid, and apparently it's the same today.

Naruto and Sasuke kiss (accidentally) in the first chapter where they appear together. Does this add a special dimension to their rivalry?
I didn't have any particular reason for it, other than to surprise the readers. I mainly did it because I don't think there has ever been a manga where two rivals have kissed. Also, by having this encounter, it was easier to set up the love triangle: Sakura, who had intended to be the first one to kiss Sasuke, has it stolen by her rival Naruto. Sasuke and Naruto are rivals, so there's added tension there. And so on and so fourth.

Is there ever going to be a manga adaptation of Ichalcha Paradise [Make-Out Paradise]?
NEVER.

In closing, what advice would you give to fans who are interested in becoming artists themselves?
Creating manga isn't just about drawing well, but writing a good story. Keep the art and story real, and you can't lose. Also, watch a lot of good Hollywood movies. Those who rail against the entertainment industry are just being close-minded.
